After 27 years of service, Internet Explorer's run finally comes to an end
Born in August 1995, Microsoft's historic browser is retiring following a steady and decisive decline that has lasted for years.
Internet Explorer is a true legend in the digital world. Its almost uncontested dominance lasted for several years (IE’s market share was over 90% in the early 2000s). It was then overtaken by the competition: first with the birth of Safari for Macintosh computers (2003), then with the arrival of Mozilla (2004), and finally in 2008, when Google launched Chrome.
According to the specialized site Kinsta, IE’s market share was now only 2%, compared to 77% for Google Chrome and 8% for Safari.
"The future of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 is in Microsoft Edge", Microsoft wrote in a statement. "Not only is Microsoft Edge a faster, more secure and more modern browsing experience than Internet Explorer, but it is also able to address a key concern: compatibility for older, legacy websites and applications”, said Sean Lyndersay, general manager of Microsoft Edge Enterprise.
