Apple unveils Vision Pro virtual reality headset
Apple announced its mixed-reality headset during its WWDC developer conference. The Vision Pro is its first major new product since the Apple Watch in 2014.
“Just as the Mac introduced us to personal computing, and iPhone introduced us to mobile computing, Apple Vision Pro introduces us to spatial computing," said Apple CEO Tim Cook.
The screen has more pixels than a 4K TV. The device is running on Apple’s M2 chip, as well as a new, mixed-reality-specific R1 chip. Overall, there are 12 cameras, five sensors and six microphones. There’s also a digital crown on the top of the device that you can use for adjustments.
Apple’s Vision Pro uses eye movements and hand movements for navigation. It also employs voice input. It allows you to watch a movie in virtual reality (Disney Plus will be available from day one), but also to play games (100 Apple Arcade titles will be available at launch), to make video calls with FaceTime, to take photos, view Apple maps, work out with the Fitness App, read news on Safari or work with Mail and Documents. All thanks to visionOS, the operating system created ad hoc by Apple for mixed reality.
Apple has also thought of a particular feature: Eyesight, which allows other people to see the eyes of the person wearing the headset.
Apple Vision Pro starts at $3,499, and will be available early next year on apple.com and at Apple Store locations in the U.S., with more countries coming later next year.
