World Emoji Day is the brainchild of Jeremy Burge, historian of emoticons and founder of Emojipedia, the website that collects and catalogs all emojis. The date originally referred to the day Apple premiered its iCal calendar application in 2002. The day, July 17, was displayed on the Apple Color Emoji version of the calendar emoji as an Easter egg.
The widespread use of emojis dates back to 2011. According to a recent analysis by Meta, on Instagram and Facebook profiles around the world, the most popular emojis are those related to sports and food. Do you use emojis? Which one do you use the most? Join the celebration on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok or Facebook using the hashtag #WorldEmojiDay.
Up to 31 new emojis could come to iOS and Android next year. The new emojis include a shaking Face, a moose, a goose, the long-awaited pink heart (the new draft also includes gray and light blue hearts), a Wi-Fi sign, a folding hand fan, a pea pod, a jellyfish, maracas, a flute and a Khanda (the symbol of the Sikh faith).
