Apple's iOS 17 is official! It includes several new features...
iOS 17 has finally been announced during the Apple WWDC 2023 keynote!
Let's take a look at new features introduced for the iPhone.
“With iOS 17, we’ve made iPhone more personal and intuitive by deeply considering the features we all rely on every day,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering.
The Phone app receives a big update with personalized Contact Posters, full-screen images customized for each contact that bring a completely new look to incoming calls. A new feature called Live voicemail allows you to see real-time transcription as someone leaves a voicemail, and the opportunity to pick up while the caller is leaving the message.
FaceTime now supports audio and video messages so when you call someone who is not available, you can share a message that can be enjoyed later.
Messages also gets significant updates with iOS 17: you can create Live Stickers by lifting subjects from your own photos, transcribe audio messages in real time while they are being sent, and notify contacts that you have made it to your destination safely (new CheckIn feature).
Apple has announced a new AirDrop-related feature called NameDrop. It allows users to easily share contact information by simply bringing their iPhones together, or by bringing an iPhone and Apple Watch together. With the same gesture, users can also share content or start SharePlay to listen to music, watch a movie, or play a game while in close proximity between iPhone devices.
Apple is also introducing its own journaling app. Simply called “Journal,” it uses on-device machine learning to create personalized suggestions to inspire writing.
One of the great novelties of iOS 17 is StandBy, a new display experience designed for a charging iPhone that's placed in a horizontal. It's like the Apple Watch's nightstand mode, with a lot more at the user's disposal on the larger iPhone display.
iOS 17 also brings new features for Safari, Health, Maps, Apple Music, Siri (it can be activated by simply saying “Siri”).
Apple's iOS 17 will arrive this fall for the iPhone XS and newer.
