Gone are the days when Netflix tweeted “Love is sharing a password”.
All these years the company has turned a blind eye to password sharing in order to popularize its streaming service.
According to a new report from The Wall Street Journal, Netflix is planning to put an end to password sharing.
The company says that more than 100 million Netflix viewers watch the service using passwords they borrow. Starting early next year, it will charge accounts for password sharing, instituting a system that adds fees for "extra member" subaccounts when people outside one household use the membership.
The service will detect an account household by looking at IP addresses, device IDs and account activity from devices logged in to the same account.
In addition to boosting revenue by eliminating password sharing, Netflix has also introduced a $6.99-a-month ad-supported tier. The goal is to capture new users looking for a discount to more expensive ad-free plans.
